The Writer Writes

by Sandra Conner

I think I'll write a poem …
Type, type, type …
Words, words, words …

'Twill have to be a story ...
Type, type, type ...
Words, words, words ...

No … I guess a novel …
Type, type, type …
Words, words, words …

A saga will be better …
Type, type, type …
Words, words, words …

A trilogy is called for …
Type, type, type …
Words, words, words …

My editor now reads it …
Delete, delete, delete …
Delete, delete, delete …

I have a two-line stanza.

  1. Sounds familiar, except I'm my own editor.

    1. Most of the time I am too, except for the newspaper stuff. But I've listened to the advice of one particular editor of fiction over the years and have learned a lot from him --- primarily to be ruthless about editing. So sometimes, when all is said and done, I'm my own worst editor. But I try to live by the motto that I found several years ago that says, "Done is better than perfect. Sometime after the 10th revision, you have to let it go." I don't know who said this, but he was undoubtedly an author.
